Curator's choice of the competition: Macro -29-
Glasswinged butterfly (Greta oto) is resting on a leaf. When a glasswinged butterfly is flying, it is for predators almost invisible. The wings are transparent, but like a glass window there should be a reflectiion of light. But there isn't a reflection. Scientists from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology have discovered the trick: The butterfly wings namely have irregular nanostructures on the surface, and thus is very little light reflected: depending on the angle just between two and five percent.
For a glass pane, it is depending on the viewing direction between eight and 100 percent.

Johannes Öhl also joined the competition with these photos
Atala (Eumaeus atala florida)
Egg-laying Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia)
Tiger Longwing (Heliconius hecale)
