made for the book: One Minute on Earth 2014
As chance would have it, the magic minute here in Sydney, landed on 7am. Being blessed with a sunrise opportunity, I took the chance to photograph one of the many beautiful coast scenes found along the east coast of Australia. The fortified Bare Island is linked by a footbridge making it appear "other worldly", a theme I had envisaged and tried to portray in the final image you see before you

The government of the day built an elaborate fort on this island 30 metres off the coast of La Perouse in the early 1880s, seeing the land Captain Cook had described a century earlier as “a small bare island” as a good place to ward off invaders. But from the moment it opened in 1885, there were problems: an 1890 Royal Commission found that inferior concrete had been used and the crumbling fort was decommissioned by 1902.
The current museum was originally built as cable station to house the operation of the first submarine telegraph communications cable laid between Australia and Nelson in New Zealand. This cable also served as the first link in telegraph communications between New Zealand and the rest of the world. It now lies under the jurisdiction of the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service and has been utilised as a location in the movie Mission Impossible II.
This shot has been on my bucket list for some time now. I finally found the drive this morning to get out and explore "Bare Island". Whilst still dark, I climbed down the cliff face and onto the rock platform. To gain the most from the location, wet feet were inevitable. No mean feat in winter time! As the sun rose at 7am, I fired a series of long exposures allowing the waves to ghost over the rocks. the foreground in this image was brought to life using some simple light painting techniques. You can really see why they call sunrise the magic hour!
