One Minute on Earth

One Minute on Earth (Exclusive photo)I was talking to one of your members the other day who had posted on 500px about this project and I thought it was a wonderful idea. I'm more of a wildlife photographer but as you know I couldn't count on any wildlife posing for me from 5:00 pm - 5:00:59. I had told him that I didn't have any fantastic landscapes close to me but I would think about what I could photograph. Then I thought hey you live where the longest fresh water beach is located - I think you tend to take things like that for granted when you see it on a daily basis. This is Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada - the party beach. I shot this frame at 5:00:19 on June 21. You can see the beach, Blue Mountain in the background and the many people enjoying a Saturday at the beach with a few gulls flying around for good measure. Hope you like it. Good luck with the book - I hope you raise lot's of money for the orphanage!! ...

Light Your Way Home

Light Your Way Home I had been driving around my moms neighbourhood around 22:45 looking for something to shoot for the book, I then decided to go back to her house and shoot on the street corner where they boys hang out. They always provided entertaining shots, sort of a failsafe and as I was driving back the track Breathe by The Cinematic Orchestra plays and I see this scene in front of me and I just knew that this would be my image. ...

Newburgh Bridge Hudson River -Newburgh, NY

Newburgh Bridge Hudson River -Newburgh, NY (Exclusive photo)This image taken from a friends house, I Had never been before , had no idea what the view was before I arrived for a birthday party the day of the OMOE. I heard about the OMOE2014 from a friend Ashley Newell who has worked in Langa. Langa holds special meaning to me because I had been arrested there photographing under apartheid in 1986 , and when I heard this competition would help raise funds for an orphanage there I was happy to participate. ...

16h00, Somewhere in the Colca Canyon

16h00, Somewhere in the Colca Canyon This is one of the three pictures I was able to take at 16h00 while trekking with the family in the Colca Canyon, with my 18-month old son in my backpack and my other two children (6 and 8) walking behind me! The Colca Canyon is a canyon in southern Peru, more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States. The local people maintain their ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces. As I was in an organised trek with other people, I did have the possibility to chose the best OMOE spot. Still, I was lucky enough to have a nice mountain in front of me at exactly 16h00, Peruvian time! The shooting also allowed me to rest a bit, after two full hours of trekking in the beautiful Peruvian nature with my little ones and my wife! Wave Faber ...

One Thousand Feet Down

One Thousand Feet Down We chose Horseshoe Overlook south of Page, Arizona, because it is a classic image of the Southwest. In addition, the 36% crescent moon would be hanging right above the horizon at the moment of truth. The overlook is about a 4½ hour drive from home, plus, being on the Navajo reservation, It would be an hour ahead of Phoenix, which does not observe Daylight Savings Time. There had been a huge landslide the year before which required a detour onto an unfamiliar road, and we found ourselves behind schedule, and would barely make it to the trailhead in time to climb the sand filled ¾ mile to the edge and our shooting spot. As we got to the end of the detour, our GPS said to turn right, but that didn't seem correct, so I decided to pull off the road and double check our information. What looked like the perfect spot turned into the perfect nightmare as the car sunk almost to the axles in fine red dust. The clock was ticking, and no amount or rocking, gear changing, or wheel turning would get us out. Just as we were about to grab the camera gear and tripod and start running south to our destination, a Navajo family in a pickup truck saw our plight and quickly maneuvered into position to pull us out. Minutes later we were on terra firma, and, after exchanging names, handshakes and our heartfelt thanks, we were once again on our way. Pulling into the parking lot, we grabbed our gear and charged up the hill like Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, slid down the back side and got to our vantage point with moments to spare. There was time for a few panoramas, a test shot or two, and the moment was upon us! Click, click, click, and the deed was done. It had all passed in a blur. Regarding the image, the tiny speck of white in the center on the far side of the river below is actually a boat, which gives some sense of the immensity of scale to this image. The color of the river, a deep emerald green is due to algae and the severe drought conditions currently prevalent in the Southwest. The Colorado, which means "red colored" is, in wetter years, a deep rusty color from the silt which is carried into the river from run-off from the drainage area which is predominantly Navajo Sandstone. ...

Do what you can

Do what you can (Exclusive photo)It happened that 21st June I was in Vilnius, Lithuania and was planning to take some street shots at midnight over there. The city center is usually lively and crowded by young people. However it's not always what and how we plan... Bad weather, no people, no tripod... just me and my Fuji desperate and frustrated going back to the car when suddenly exactly at midnight someone started fireworks on the bank of the river Neris. I was not really ready for this, but I guess I tried to get what I could in that situation - handhold camera and ISO pushed to 6400 just not to loose the shot. That moment I felt united with all the other photographers around the world, who were participating in OMOE, and it made me happy. ...

Sail Away

Sail Away Taken at 11pm local time in Waginengen, Netherlands. Sunset was ~10pm so we are still in the blue hour and the sky was an amazing deep colour. I wanted the colour to dominate the image and I love the way the white sails are reflecting the light. Its a 30s shot and you can just pick out tiny star trails. This is the only existing windmill in Waginengen and is a delightful reminder of a fabulous location. ...

Sailing the moment

Sailing the moment This picture was taken at the boat Liberty of the seas, at the main dinning room. The boat was located at some lattitude at the Mediterranean Sea, near to the coast of France. Apart from portrait the ambiance of such a wonderful location also wanted to express the feeling of the end of a journey. After a week at the sea, it was the last day on board and the feeling that the end was closed inspired the take. It was the moment that everything has to be clean and tide up at the end of a journey. ...
