Monument Valley

Monument Valley I began searching for the location for my contribution to the book by establishing parameters: first and foremost, I wanted the image to classically define the topography of the Southwestern United States. Secondly, the destination needed to be within a day's drive, preferably within seven hours and 800km of my home in Phoenix, Arizona. Finally, this iconic Southwestern view had to be on the meridian where the sun would be coming up at exactly six am on April 6th. Using a software program called The Photographer's Ephemeris, we determined that Hunts Mesa in Monument Valley would be the perfect spot. We left Phoenix at six am on the morning of the 5th, and drove to Flagstaff, Tuba City, Kayenta, and arrived at the park around three pm that afternoon. Because the Hunts Mesa is on tribal lands, we engaged Carlos Phillips of Monument Valley Tours to get us up onto the mesa and in position to capture the shot the next morning. The trip took over 2 1/2 hours over terrain that can only be described as as tortuous in the extreme. In places there was no discernible road at all and required incredible skill, nerve, and an intimate knowledge of both the capabilities of our vehicle and the entire length of the miles long abandoned uranium mining road which was our route. After hours of gut wrenching, heart pounding, teeth chattering travel, during which Carlos regaled us with tales of Navajo culture, history, and past trips all over the Four Corners area, we finally arrived at the top of the mesa, and started exploring locations for the sunset which was fast approaching. We shot for about an hour and a half, and Carlos arrived in the truck to ferry us over to the campsite several miles to the east. We ate dinner and crawled into our tent. The alarm went off what seemed like ten minutes later, and dawn was an hour away. Grabbing my backpack and tripod I hiked out to the point overlooking the valley floor and set up, checking the time on the GPS unit attached to my camera to make sure my shots would be within the correct time-frame. I decided to do a ten shot panorama in addition to several single exposures just to add a little excitement. Suddenly my timer alarm went off, and I had a ten second countdown. I started with several single shots for insurance purposes, and then reeled off the ten shot panorama. A few more single images, and the minute had come and gone. We shot for another hour, made our way back to the campsite to hot coffee and breakfast, and after packing up, made the long trip down off the mesa, and eventually, home to Phoenix. ...

Concrete mushrooms color - Kuwait 15:00:30

Concrete mushrooms color - Kuwait 15:00:30 These "Concrete mushroom" towers can be seen looming in different parts of Kuwait. They are water tanks of slightly varying heights. On the 5th of April, 2013, Kuwait was hit by a sandstorm ( http://www.kujaja.com/en/photo/5534 ). Some last for minutes and some for days. The farthest building, the one in the middle, is about 300 meters away. No one would like to take their gear out in this weather, no matter what the cost of your equipment might be. Luckily for me, on D-Day the dust cleared. If you look at the pictures here, you will notice the haze in the distance. I had decided on my spot 2 days in advance. Its about 1 km from where I live. So getting there in time was not a problem. These shots were taken without a tripod. I included the street with traffic to show signs of life at the time. My time in Kuwait : 3PM. Got the right time after initial confusion reading through various conflicting posts regarding daylight savings switch. The sun is shining in from the right and those clouds looked like they were just waiting for me. During this shoot, I realized how long or short one minute is and how valuable every second is. Also wondered, in one minute where the water from these towers ended up and for what. I would like to thank "kujaja", the members and the viewers. ...

City of Edmonton Skyline @ 6am

City of Edmonton Skyline @ 6am After my friend Donna and I made our way to the top of the tabboganing hill located just south of down town Edmoton on Clover Hill Rd. I made my way partialy down the hill. Slip sliding all the way, from the 6cm of snow that fell the day before. Not to mention the temp. at the time of the shoot was -10 C. I had preset the settings for my camera, witch turned out to be wrong. So I reset them, crossed my fingers. At the for front of Edmonton's beautiful skyline are the pyramids. One of Edmonton’s most iconic structures, the Muttart Conservatory offers a year-round escape into the beauty of the world’s plant life. Vibrant, colorful, tranquil and inspirational, the pyramids’ display gardens are a welcome oasis for all. Designed by award-winning Canadian architect Peter Hemingway, the Muttart Conservatory officially opened in September 1976. ...
